SWEP B65 Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers

A Mixed Pack at 685 GPM

The L+M designation is a mixed pack - low-theta and medium-theta plates in the same unit.

Low-theta and medium-theta plates in one unit. 864 x 363 mm with up to 361 plates - the L+M pack is how a unit this size is tuned between pressure drop and surface utilisation.

That is how SWEP tunes a large exchanger where a single chevron angle would either cost too much pressure drop or leave too much surface idle. At 361 plates and 864 mm tall this is a substantial machine, and it competes with gasketed plate-and-frame on duties where the gasket itself is the maintenance liability.

Flange and weld connections only. At this scale threaded ports are gone: 316/316L plates, copper brazing, PED, UL and KHK approvals, and just over a kilogram of pack weight per plate.

Reading the part number. A B65 is ordered as a full string - frame, plate type, plate count, pass arrangement, materials and pressure class, for example B65LM/2S-SC-S. Every field is decodable: the model number guide explains each one, and the string off your nameplate, complete or partial, is enough for us to confirm the build and quote it.

Confirming Fit on a B65 Replacement

The B65 measures 864 x 363 mm (34.02 x 14.29 in) over the plate pack, with port centres of 731 x 231 mm (28.78 x 9.09 in). Connections on the catalogued builds: Flange, Weld.

SWEP publishes the weight as 1.03 kg per plate, so the plate count off the nameplate sets what the mounting has to carry.

A full pack passes 370 kg before water - rigging, not plumbing, drives the installation plan at this size.

B65 in Practice

Three things. The face is 864 x 363 mm (34.02 x 14.29 in) and the port centres are 731 x 231 mm (28.78 x 9.09 in); both are fixed for the frame and should match the old unit exactly.

The third is depth, and it is not fixed. It grows with plate count, so a replacement with more plates than the original moves the rear connections or the back of the unit toward whatever is behind it. On flanged or welded pipework there is no adjustment to absorb that. Measure the old pack front to back, and check the clearance and lifting access as well as the flange faces.

The frame is published up to 361 plates, and the builds on file run from 80 to 280 - B65x80, B65x120, B65x160, B65x200 and upward.

More plates share the same flow across more channels, so pressure drop comes down and the approach tightens. The cost is weight and depth. At 1.03 kg (2.271 lb) per plate, a 280-plate unit is about 288 kg (636 lb) dry.

With a full-flow strainer that passes nothing larger than 1 mm, the published limit for this frame. On a line carrying this much water that means a properly sized basket or automatic self-cleaning strainer, not a wye strainer picked by line size alone.

The reason to take it seriously on a B65 is cost and access. The unit cannot be opened, it is too heavy to pull out casually, and cleaning means circulating chemical through a large hold-up volume. Fit gauges across the strainer and the exchanger at commissioning and record the clean pressure drops, so fouling is caught as a trend. Cleaning in Place describes the procedure.

No. The datasheet lists flange and weld only. A unit passing this much flow needs connections of a size where threading is not practical.

For a replacement, that puts the detail in the flange: its standard, size and pressure rating have to match the mating flange already on the pipe, and a weld-end unit has to match the pipe schedule. The part numbers on file for this frame record plate count but not the connection, so read the flange marking or measure the bolt circle on the old unit and include it with the nameplate string.

Start with what is always there. A short string such as B65x200 gives the frame and the plate count: 200 plates.

The full form, B65LM/2S-SC-S, adds the rest. LM is the plate pack, mixing L and M chevron plates. /2S is the pass arrangement. SC is 316/316L plates with copper braze. The final S is the pressure class, a category covering 31 bar at 155 C; the stamped rating on the nameplate is what governs the installation. Connections follow in port order. If the nameplate shows P65 or V65 instead of B65, that is a different model on the same 864 x 363 mm plate. The Model Number Guide explains each field.

These models are catalogued alongside the B65. Each has its own page with its dimensions, materials and part numbers.

SWEP P65 - A large copper-brazed 316/316L unit for high-capacity chillers and gas vaporization.

SWEP V65 - High-capacity evaporator on the B65 frame, 864 x 363 mm, up to 360 plates, 684.65 GPM max flow.
