Water to water, glycol to water, and the isolation duties that keep one loop's pressure, chemistry and static head away from another's.
Liquid on both sides, no phase change. These duties differ in temperatures, approach and what has to be kept apart - open one for its frames and its usual commissioning faults.
Boiler isolation, glycol separation, free cooling and heat recovery all reduce to the same drawing: two circuits that must exchange heat without mixing. What varies is which side fouls, which side freezes, and how tight an approach the economics demand.
Those three questions, answered honestly, select the frame.
On heat recovery the approach IS the payback; on boiler isolation it is return temperature and condensing efficiency. Plate count buys approach, and plate count is most of the price - so the right number comes from the system, not from a margin habit.
