Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers in Process and Industry

Industrial duty is where the fluids get difficult - oil that resists transferring heat, deionized water that attacks copper, washdown chemistry, and process streams that foul. The SWEP range answers with materials as much as with surface: 316 plates as standard, nickel and All-Stainless brazing where copper cannot go, and SMO 254 where chlorides pit ordinary stainless.

Industrial process duties are the ones that leave the standard pressure class behind and call on the higher classes and the alternative plate and braze materials. The Industrial Process page shows how to tell when a duty has crossed that line.

In food and beverage plants the brazed unit belongs on the utility side - the glycol, hot water and CIP loops around the product, not the product stream. The Food and Beverage page explains where that boundary sits.

Pure water service is a materials question before it is a thermal one: deionized water leaches copper, so the braze has to be copper free. The Pharmaceutical and Pure Water page goes through the constructions that qualify.

On vessels and vehicles the exchanger faces seawater and a mounting that never sits still. The Marine and Transport page deals with each in turn.

Name both fluids rather than describing them, give the flows and temperatures on each side, and say which stream fouls.

Process duty is where the pressure classes and the material options earn their place. General building work sits inside the standard class; process work routinely does not.

Process and Industrial Applications

General process cooling, food and beverage, pharmaceutical water and marine duty - the principles match building work; the fluids are what make them harder.

Materials Are the Selection

Copper braze is attacked by ammonia and leaches into ultrapure water; 316 pits in chlorides. Most industrial mis-selections are material mistakes, not thermal ones, and they fail in months rather than years. The fluid list decides the build before the duty does.

Fouling Sets the Service Life

A brazed pack cannot be opened, so on fouling fluids the strainer and the CIP connections are part of the exchanger specification.

Published particle ceilings run 0.4 to 1.1 mm across the range - the strainer mesh comes off the datasheet, not off a habit.

Duty Profile Matters as Much as Duty

A washdown load that arrives in bursts or a machine that runs one shift in three sizes differently from its average.

Where the peak is short, buffer volume is usually cheaper than surface area.
