SWEP DB300 Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers

Asymmetric Plates, Low Water Drop

The SWEP DB300 is a dual condenser built on AsyMatrix asymmetric plates, which keep the water-side pressure drop low. It serves two-circuit chillers and heat pumps in the 200 to 400 GPM band.

A high-flow dual condenser on a compact footprint. The DB300 measures 525 x 243 mm (20.67 x 9.57 in) and is built with up to 346 plates. Published maximum flow is 60 m3/h (264.17 GPM).

The water and refrigerant channels on a DB300 are not the same size. AsyMatrix is an asymmetric channel design, and on the DB300 SWEP uses it to hold the water pressure drop down. That is the reason to pick this model: a condenser loop with limited pump head. Its siblings on the 525 x 243 mm footprint are the DP300, the matching dual evaporator with 304 plates, and the DP310, a True Dual evaporator optimized for refrigerant performence. The mistake is to replace a DB300 with a symmetric-plate unit of the same size and plate count, then find the condenser water flow has fallen because the pump cannot make the higher pressure drop. The DB300 is now designated DBD300.

316/316L plates, copper braze. Threaded, Victaulic, solder and combo connections are catalogued. The copper braze excludes ammonia and deionized water.

What the nameplate tells us. Every DB300 carries its build in the designation, for example DB300x140: plate type, plate count, pass arrangement, materials and pressure class. The model number guide walks through the fields.

Confirming Fit on a DB300 Replacement

The DB300 measures 525 x 243 mm (20.67 x 9.57 in) over the plate pack. Connections on the catalogued builds: Threaded, Victaulic, Solder, Combo.

SWEP publishes the weight as 7.75 kg plus 0.336 kg per plate, so the plate count off the nameplate sets what the mounting has to carry.

Footprint alone does not confirm a DB300. The type, size and position of every connection has to match on both refrigerant circuits and on the water side, and the replacement has to be the same asymmetric plate so the water pressure drop stays where the pump expects it. Depth grows with plate count, so confirm the clearance behind the unit.

DB300 in Practice

Read the letter that follows the material code in the designation; that is the pressure class. M, the class normally used with refrigerants such as R410A, covers up to 45 bar at 135 C and is fatigue tested. S covers 31 bar at 155 C.

The class is a category, and the stamped figures on the nameplate are the rating of that unit. None of the DB300 configurations on file has a class recorded, so we work from your nameplate. If the letter is one other than L, S, M, H or U, send it as stamped and we will confirm the rating with the quote.

The DB300 designations on file carry no pass field, so the nameplate settles it for a given unit: the pass arrangement follows the plate count after a slash, and 1P is single pass.

Multi-pass sends the fluid through the plate pack more than once. That lengthens the thermal path and tightens the approach, and it raises the pressure drop. On the DB300 that works against the reason the model exists, which is low water pressure drop.

In place, by circulation. Condensers on open tower water foul faster than any other brazed duty, with scale and biological growth both narrowing the water channels.

Isolate the water side, circulate a cleaner suited to stainless steel and copper in the reverse of the service direction, then flush and neutralize. Watch the condensing pressure and the water pressure drop accross the unit as the indicators; both climb as the channels close up. Clean early, because a heavily blocked channel gets no cleaner flow. Fit a strainer on the water inlet. See Cleaning in Place.

The footprint is 525 x 243 mm (20.67 x 9.57 in). After that it is the connections: their type, size and position on both refrigerant circuits and on the water side, taken from the old unit itself.

Depth is the variable. The frame is built up to 346 plates, and the configurations on file run from 50 to 220, so two DB300 units can differ a great deal front to back. Weight follows the same count at 7.75 kg plus 0.336 kg per plate, which puts a 220-plate unit at 81.67 kg dry. Confirm the plate count before anything is cut.

These models are catalogued alongside the DB300. Each has its own page with its dimensions, materials and part numbers.
