SWEP V25 Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers

V-Ring Distribution Evaporator

The SWEP V25 is a tall, narrow evaporator with SWEP's V-ring refrigerant distribution system. It is built for demanding cooling duties and also serves as a reversible condenser and as a cascade exchanger in two-phase applications.

Tall and narrow, up to 140 plates. The V25 measures 524 x 116 mm (20.63 x 4.57 in) with port centres of 479 x 72 mm. Maximum plate count is 140 and published max flow is 39.63 GPM (9 m3/h).

The V-ring is the reason to specify a V25. SWEP states that the V-ring distribution system gives optimal evaporator operation in both counter-current and co-current configurations, including with large plate packs. That matters in a reversible machine, where the flows run co-current in one mode. The B25T is published at 526 x 119 mm with 304 plates - close to the V25, but not the same outline and not the same unit. The mistake is fitting a B25T because the plate count and connections look alike; uneven refrigerant feed then shows up as unstable superheat and lost capacity.

Solder and combo connections, class M on file. Published connection styles are threaded and solder; the part numbers on file use 12.8 and 22U refrigerant connections with 2x1"&22U combo water connections. Plates are 316/316L with copper braze (SC), pressure class M on file, and approvals are PED, UL and KHK.

Reading the designation. A V25 is ordered as a full string, for example V25THx50/1P-SC-M 12.8+22U+2x1"&22U. The model number guide decodes each field, and the string off the nameplate - whole or partial - is enough to confirm the build.

Confirming Fit on a V25 Replacement

The V25 measures 524 x 116 mm (20.63 x 4.57 in) over the plate pack, with port centres of 479 x 72 mm (18.86 x 2.83 in). Connections on the catalogued builds: Threaded, Solder.

SWEP publishes the weight as 3.27 kg plus 0.254 kg per plate, so the plate count off the nameplate sets what the mounting has to carry.

Beyond the outline, the port centres must match the existing lines and the depth must suit the space, since the pack gets deeper with each plate. The refrigerant inlet is the port that carries the V-ring distribution, so the unit has to go back in the same orientation with the refrigerant and water on the same ports as before. Match each connection by type and size, including which water connections are combo fittings.

What Installers Ask About the V25

The outline is 524 x 116 mm (20.63 x 4.57 in) and the port centres are 479 x 72 mm. Check both, because the B25T is published at 526 x 119 mm and a bracket or insulation shell made for one should not be assumed to suit the other.

Then check depth against the plate count - the configurations on file run 30, 40 and 50 plates, and each step is a deeper unit. Finally the connections: the catalogued units carry a 12.8 solder inlet and a 22U outlet on the refrigerant side and a pair of 1 in & 22U combo connections on the water side. A 22U takes both 7/8 in and 22 mm pipe.

SWEP publishes a maximum particle size of 1 mm for the V25, so fit a strainer on the water inlet with openings finer than that and keep it serviceable.

The reason is that a brazed unit cannot be opened. Debris that lodges in the channels stays there untill it is flushed out in place, and until then the affected channels carry less water. In an evaporator that is worse than a simple loss of capacity: a starved channel runs colder than its neighbours and can freeze locally. Rising water pressure drop at constant flow is the early sign. Cleaning in Place covers recovery.

Work from what the catalogued V25 units have in common. The designations on file read V25THx30, V25THx40 and V25THx50, all single-pass, all material code SC and pressure class M, with 12.8+22U+2x1"&22U connections. If the plate count is the only thing you can read, that already narrows it to one or two configurations.

Some of those designations carry a figure in parentheses after each connection, such as (20). It is part of the designation, so copy it if it is visible. Where nothing is legible, count the plates on the edge of the pack and measure the refrigerant inlet.

The frame builds to 140 plates. The part numbers on file sit at the small end, 30 to 50 plates. Each added plate brings more surface, lower water pressure drop and a closer approach, along with more depth and 0.254 kg (0.560 lb) of weight.

SWEP notes that the V-ring keeps evaporator operation optimal with large plate packs, which is where plain distribution tends to break down. Even so, a larger pack changes the refrigerant velocity per channel and the expansion valve match, so a higher plate count than the original should come from a rating, not a guess. See Plate Count and Capacity.

These models are catalogued alongside the V25. Each has its own page with its dimensions, materials and part numbers.
