SWEP DB200 Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers

Two Circuits, One Condenser

The SWEP DB200 is a True Dual condenser: two refrigerant circuits rejecting heat into one water circuit inside a single brazed plate pack. It is built for chillers and heat pumps that run two compressors against a common condenser water loop.

One plate pack sized for a two-circuit machine. The DB200 measures 525 x 243 mm (20.67 x 9.57 in) and is built with up to 202 plates. Published maximum flow is 27 m3/h (118.88 GPM).

Matching the outside dimensions is not enough on this frame. The DB200 shares its 525 x 243 mm footprint with the B200T, F200T, P200T and V200T and with the True Dual evaporators DP200 and DV200, so a tape measure cannot tell them apart. What separates the DB200 is its duty - it is the condenser of the dual family - and its flow ceiling of 118.88 GPM against 192.41 GPM on the B200T. The mistake to avoid is ordering by footprint and plate count alone: an evaporator plate or a single-circuit unit will bolt into the same space and then fail to do the job. The model is now designated DBD200.

316/316L stainless plates with copper braze. Connections are catalogued as threaded, Victaulic, solder, combo, flange and weld, which covers both the refrigerant lines and the water side of most machines. Copper braze rules the unit out for ammonia and for deionized water.

What the nameplate tells us. Every DB200 carries its build in the designation, for example DB200x130: plate type, plate count, pass arrangement, materials and pressure class. The model number guide walks through the fields.

Confirming Fit on a DB200 Replacement

The DB200 measures 525 x 243 mm (20.67 x 9.57 in) over the plate pack, with port centres of 456 x 174 mm (17.95 x 6.85 in). Connections on the catalogued builds: Threaded, Victaulic, Solder, Combo, Flange, Weld.

SWEP publishes the weight as 9.30 kg plus 0.4 kg per plate, so the plate count off the nameplate sets what the mounting has to carry.

On a DB200 the footprint is the easy part. The port centres have to match, the connection type and size on each refrigerant circuit and on the water side have to match, and both circuits have to land where the existing lines are. Depth grows with the plate count, so check the clearance behind the unit if the replacement carries more plates than the original.

Frequently Asked About the DB200

It is a condenser for chillers and heat pumps with two refrigerant circuits. Both circuits condense against one water stream in the same plate pack, which saves the space and the water piping of two separate condensers.

It is the wrong choice for a single-circuit machine, where the plain B200T on the same footprint carries more water, and for evaporator duty, where the DP200 and DV200 are the dual models to look at. It is also wrong for ammonia or deionized water, because the braze is copper.

DB200 is the model and size: the True Dual condenser on the 525 x 243 mm plate. x90 is the plate count, 90 plates in this case. Those two fields fix the footprint and the depth of the unit.

A complete nameplate carries more after the plate count: the pass arrangement, a material code, a pressure class letter and then the connections in port order. Send those too if they are legible, because two units that both read DB200x90 can still differ in connections. The Model Number Guide walks through each field.

The frame is built up to 202 plates, and the 16 configurations we have on file run from 50 to 200 plates, including 50, 90, 130 and 170.

Adding plates adds heat transfer surface and flow area together. Capacity goes up, water-side pressure drop for the same flow comes down, and the condensing temperature sits closer to the leaving water temperature. The costs are depth, weight and refrigerant charge. On a replacement, stay with the original count.

All of them measure 525 x 243 mm. The B200T is the standard frame with 316/316L plates and a published maximum flow of 192.41 GPM. The F200T, P200T and V200T are evaporators on that frame, also at 192.41 GPM, with 304 plates on the F200T and P200T.

The dual family - DB200, DP200 and DV200 - all carry 118.88 GPM, 316/316L plates and copper braze. Within that family the DB200 is the condenser and the other two are evaporators. The letters after the D are what you match, not the size.

SWEP publishes the weight as 9.30 kg plus 0.4 kg per plate. A 50-plate unit works out to 29.3 kg dry, a 130-plate unit to 61.3 kg and a 200-plate unit to 89.3 kg, before water and refrigerant.

That is too much to hang on the piping. Carry the unit on a bracket or base under the plate pack and support every line independently, so the connections see no load. On a two-compressor machine there are two discharge lines feeding it, each bringing its own pulsation. Vibration carried through unsupported lines is what fatigues the braze joints at the connections, and the crack shows up as a refrigerant leak at the cover plate well after the change-out.

No. The 27 m3/h (118.88 GPM) figure is a ceiling set by the ports, not a design point. A condenser selected near that flow usually shows more water pressure drop than the pump was chosen for, and port velocity becomes the limit before heat transfer does.

Size from the heat rejection, the entering and leaving water temperatures and the pressure drop you can spend, then check that the resulting flow sits comfortably under the ceiling. If it does not, the answer is a larger dual frame such as the DB400, not more plates on this one.

The designations on file for the DB200 give model and plate count only, so read the pass field off the nameplate rather than assuming it. It follows the plate count after a slash.

It matters because the pass arrangement decides where the connections are. A single-pass unit has all its connections on one cover plate; a multi-pass build routes the fluid back and forth through the pack, lengthening the thermal path at the cost of pressure drop, and puts connections on the back cover as well. Swapping one for the other means re-piping.

These models are catalogued alongside the DB200. Each has its own page with its dimensions, materials and part numbers.
